MORE PLASTIC THAN FISH
Approximately 17.6 billions pounds of plastic is dumped into the oceans each year. That's almost the equivalent of 57,000 blue whales — every single year. It's estimated that by 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish.
DANGERS OF PLASTIC
It takes about 400 years for sun exposure and waves help degrade most plastic ocean trash into smaller pieces which then often finds its way into the food chain. The plastics that don't or haven't degraded remain in the ocean and harm marine life.
Not only does our ocean trash remain a nuisance for 400 years while waiting to degrade, but the process releases chemicals that further contaminate the water.
UNRECYCLED PLASTIC IS THE DUMPS
There is so much single use plastics among other ocean debris that it has formed 2 garbage patches around the world. The largest is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is an estimated 1.8 trillion pieces of debris that covers an area twice the size of Texas.
